While the author focuses largely on the comparison of latent prints, he also covers latent print development techniques, photography of latent prints, how to roll fingerprints and a brief description of fingerprint and palm print pattern definitions. Each subject starts with the basics, then moves into advanced theory. Mr. Cowger successfully explains the complex thought processes and scientific concepts involved in performing a latent print comparison of fingers or palms. He devotes more space to palm print terms and identification than any other author has in the past. There are sections on tonally reversed prints, laterally reversed prints, distortion and overlain prints. If you do latent print comparisons, this book should be on your shelf next to Scott's Fingerprint Mechanics. 1983. Softcover, 219 pages.

Cassidy/Footwear Identification

$65.95

This revised manual is the most comprehensive work ever done on the subject of fingerprint development techniques. The first edition was excellent and now, this second edition is even better because it contains more chemical processes and important safety information.

There is a large section of color-coded charts listing a particular surface and the various latent print developing techniques to be applied to that surface, and the order in which to use them. Another large section goes into great detail of the mixing instructions and health and safety issues of the various chemicals. At the beginning of each chapter on a particular chemical, there is a color photograph of a sample of what the resulting latent print may look like. The pages are plastic-coated to resist tearing and chemical staining.

This new edition contains new chemical processes, such as alternative Amido Black formulations, new non-CFC solvent systems for Ninhydrin, and removal of some fluorescent dye formulations in Superglueª. A fingerprint laboratory floor plan, information on choosing respiratory protective equipment and health and safety guidelines have been added to Chapter Two. At the end of most divisions, there are pages listing books and journal references.

To meet all of the new safety requirements of the British Government, the Home Office rewrote the Manual to include all the possible issues involving the safe handling and mixing of these chemicals. While some of the safety requirements here in the US may be a little different than those in the UK, it is always better to use the most stringent procedures to guarantee your safety and the safety of your co-workers. 1998, Sturdy 4-ring binder, 322 pages. Second Edition.

The Fingerprint Development Handbook is a condensed version of the Manual of Fingerprint Development Techniques by the Police Scientific Development Branch of the Home Office in the United Kingdom.

Many of you may remember the first edition of the Handbook and some of you even used it as a text book in your classes in the past. Then, it went out of print and no more copies were available for almost two years. The Home Office rewrote the large Manual, updating the new chemical processes and including an extensive section on the safety issues and that book was available last year.

Now, the Home Office has produced the updated version of the Handbook. It has the wonderful sequential processing charts which tell you the types of chemical processes to use to develop latent prints on various types of surfaces and in which order. Please remember though, this is a condensed version of the Manual and some information, such as formulations, are in the Manual but not in the Handbook. The Handbook is supposed to supplement the Manual, not replace it.

Because we do not know how many copies will be produced, if you want one copy or if you want twenty or thirty copies for future classes, you might want to order them now. We cannot guarantee how long these informative books will remain in print. If you have ongoing classes all year long, consider ordering enough books for all your classes at this time. Many of you were very unhappy when you tried to order this book a few years ago and then, had to scramble around for a replacement book when you found out this one was out of print.

Mr. Robert Chisnall, one of the most published authors on the forensic study and identification of knots, has written a manual, The Forensic Analysis of Knots and Ligatures, specifically on knots as applied to criminal investigations. He has testified in hundreds of criminal cases, many of them homicides, where knots played a major role.

Almost all of us use knots every day to tie our shoelaces, to tie a package closed or to tie down a load in the back of the pickup truck. There are many other fields where knots are used, such as mountain climbing and repelling, sailing, macramé, hunting and fishing, and even the medical field. At a crime scene, if you came across a knot used to tie a victim, how would you know what type of knot it is? If it turned out to be a very unusual type of knot, it may be a lead towards a particular suspect who has a history of using this knot.

In this book, you will learn how to collect and preserve knots from crime scenes for evidence. You will learn the terms of flypping, capsizement, chirality, knot memory, hitch, loop and wend. There are names and illustrations of hundreds of knots, expertly drawn by Mr. Chisnall. Several diagrams show the manner in which knots are tied.

Because Mr. Chisnall has investigated and testified in many criminal cases, he understands the importance of evidence, how to properly collect it and what information can be determined from it. This book is not simply about how to tie knots. There is a whole chapter on the concept of the required training and skills necessary to become an expert witness in the subject of knots. The preamble was written by Geoffrey Budworth, another top expert in the field of knot investigation. There is an extensive glossary, list of references, charts, and many excellent illustrations to demonstrate and identify the numerous knots listed in this book. This is the most definitive, comprehensive book on the forensic analysis of knots.

Investigating computer crime is a very new area for many law enforcement agencies. Some hire specialists when they have the need for computer investigation. However, some larger departments are finding so much computer crime that they are training their own people to do the work. Here is a text book to help all of us understand the difficult concepts of computer crime.

.High-Technology Crime: Investigation Cases Involving Computers by Kenneth S. Rosenblatt contains nine chapters and four appendices. The chapter headings are as follows:

  • Introduction.
  • Principles of High-Technology Crime Investigation.
  • Investigating Theft of Components.
  • Investigating Computer Intrusion.
  • Investigating Theft of Information.
  • Searching, Seizing and Analyzing Computer Evidence.
  • Computers and the Fourth Amendment.
  • Federal Privacy Laws.
  • Drafting Search Warrants in Cases Involving Computers

Much of the book is written in straightforward, easy-to-understand language with some computer-specific terminology in the technical sections. The forms in the appendices are also included on a PC-format floppy disc so they can be printed and used during the investigation to become part of the written report.

There is information for the general investigator and information for the computer technician in the book. Much legal information is also included, although the author is quick to point out, he is not an attorney and for absolute legal guidance, contact your own legal counsel before actively pursuing a case.

Because of the increase occurances of computer-related crime, this is an important reference tool to help you in the investigation and successful prosecution of your cases.

Designed and created by Canadian software company IQ Biometrix, FACES™ is a breakthrough composite picture program available on CD-ROM, containing a database of nearly 4,000 specially-coded unique facial features. By simply clicking on the easy-to find features with the mouse, the average user can create a complete picture in less than 10 minutes. Because of this software's ease-of-use, composite pictures can be created by officers, witnesses and victims alike, with little or no prior computer knowledge.

Not only does FACES™ allow you to create superb quality composite pictures in minutes, but you can also send them around the world in seconds. This is due to a revolutionary feature, exclusive to FACES™, called the InterCode. The InterCode is a 38-digit alphanumeric ID code that is automatically assigned to each composite picture you create. FACES™ users can freely exchange InterCodes by phone, fax or e-mail.
