This magnifier was rated second overall in an independent study by the Science & Practices Committee of the California State Division of the International Association of Identification. It was rated highest in field-of-view and viewing distance comfort. This glass resembles the German-made glass above, except that it is larger. The thumbscrew allows the lens housing to move up and down the shaft to focus perfectly for your eyes. The base, shaft and lens housing are metal. The view is clear and in focus across the entire distortion-free flat-field lens. A threaded crosshair reticle disc is available separately.

This magnifier has an aspheric lens and a stable half-circle base. The lightweight, plastic body moves easily across a fingerprint card. It's hard acrylic lens provides long life and distortion-free magnification. The significant advantage of an aspheric lens is the capability to use them to see gray tones better and, for looking at latent prints, this is very important. If you teach a fingerprint class, this is a great, inexpensive magnifier for your students.

6X Fingerprint Magnifier

Many bloodstain examiners find this type of magnifier helpful when measuring and analyzing bloodstains. It comes in two different sizes and power of magnification. Both magnifiers have easy-to-read, built-in scales and large lenses for easy viewing. It comes in two different power, 5x and 10x. The larger 5x magnifier has a 60mm metric scale built into the base for easy measuring of large bloodstain areas, while the smaller magnifier has a powerful 10x lens for close-up examinations of bloodspatter trails. The larger unit has a 2 1/2" diameter double glass lens and has a 4" diameter base, while the smaller unit has a 1" diameter lens and a 1 3/4" base. The transparent acrylic base on these magnifiers allows ambient light to illuminate the bloodstain or other physical evidence being observed.

Because this is an aspheric lens, there is a slight distortion effect and maybe a little problem with glare. However, as soon as you have your eye next to the lens, the distortion disappears and your head is blocking the overhead glare. The significant advantage to an aspheric lens is that you are able to see gray tones better. That is an absolute necessity when working with evidence.

The general purpose scale incorporates five different scales. One measures radii from 1/16" to 3/8" in 1/32" increments. The second measures angles in degree intervals over a 90 degree range. The third measures decimal fractions of an inch over a 0.500" range at 0.005" intervals. The fourth is a metric scale, 10mm long, engraved in 0.1mm intervals. The fifth contains three lines: 0.001", 0.002" and 0.003" wide, respectively.

Metric Scale
