This magnifier was rated second overall in an independent study by the
Science & Practices Committee of the California State Division of the
International Association of Identification. It was rated highest in
field-of-view and viewing distance comfort. This glass resembles the
German-made glass above, except that it is larger. The thumbscrew allows the
lens housing to move up and down the shaft to focus perfectly for your eyes.
The base, shaft and lens housing are metal. The view is clear and in focus
across the entire distortion-free flat-field lens. A threaded crosshair
reticle disc is available separately. Specifications: |

This magnifier has an aspheric lens and a stable half-circle base. The lightweight, plastic body moves easily across a fingerprint card. It's hard acrylic lens provides long life and distortion-free magnification. The significant advantage of an aspheric lens is the capability to use them to see gray tones better and, for looking at latent prints, this is very important. If you teach a fingerprint class, this is a great, inexpensive magnifier for your students. Specifications:

Many bloodstain examiners find this type of magnifier helpful when measuring and analyzing bloodstains. It comes in two different sizes and power of magnification. Both magnifiers have easy-to-read, built-in scales and large lenses for easy viewing. It comes in two different power, 5x and 10x. The larger 5x magnifier has a 60mm metric scale built into the base for easy measuring of large bloodstain areas, while the smaller magnifier has a powerful 10x lens for close-up examinations of bloodspatter trails. The larger unit has a 2 1/2" diameter double glass lens and has a 4" diameter base, while the smaller unit has a 1" diameter lens and a 1 3/4" base. The transparent acrylic base on these magnifiers allows ambient light to illuminate the bloodstain or other physical evidence being observed. |

We scout all over the world to bring you the best choices in magnifiers.
Now, we have found a very unusual but very useful magnifier from Russia. The wide-field, fixed-focus lens is 3.5X magnification. But, there is a
supplemental lens which flips down to provide 7X magnification for examining
that specific area you wished you could see in greater detail. With this
magnifier, you can see an enlarged view of a specific area of ridge detail
in a fingerprint or palmprint or a letter in a signature. It gives you a
view at twice the magnification for those times that you need to see just a
little more detail. When you are done, just flip the supplemental lens up
and out of the way. The opening at the base is three inches in diameter. The magnifier is
available with or without a permanently mounted metric scale. You can
measure blood stains, type or handwriting on documents or other marks on
evidence. The housing is metal and the lenses are excellent-quality glass. Because this is an aspheric lens, there is a slight distortion effect and
maybe a little problem with glare. However, as soon as you have your eye
next to the lens, the distortion disappears and your head is blocking the
overhead glare. The significant advantage to an aspheric lens is that you
are able to see gray tones better. That is an absolute necessity when
working with evidence. |

The general purpose scale incorporates five different scales. One measures radii from 1/16" to 3/8" in 1/32" increments. The second measures angles in degree intervals over a 90 degree range. The third measures decimal fractions of an inch over a 0.500" range at 0.005" intervals. The fourth is a metric scale, 10mm long, engraved in 0.1mm intervals. The fifth contains three lines: 0.001", 0.002" and 0.003" wide, respectively. |

Magnifiers with acrylic lenses are lightweight and less expensive than
glass lens magnifiers. They are inexpensive enough to include in every field
kit or to have at the station where latent print evidence is being
processed. These lightweight round magnifiers are economically priced. The durable
ABS plastic handles are shaped to fit comfortably in the hand. The acrylic
lenses are produced to high aphthalmic standards. However, if you are
working with ultraviolet light or with other Forensic Light Sources, you
should have a magnifier with a glass lens. When trying to view a latent
print developed with fluorescent powder or chemicals and illuminated with a
Forensic Light Source, these acrylic lenses will fog and you will not be
able to see the print clearly. Acrylic-Lens Rectangular Reader This magnifier is ideal for reading and features a durable ABS plastic
frame and 2" x 4" lens. It has a 2X magnification. Many document examiners
prefer the wider lens of this magnifier. |

Finely crafted magnifiers that are small enough to carry with you in
almost any situation, pocket-size magnifiers are a must for any crime-scene
investigator or document examiner. Their ease-of-use and small portable size
make them easy to carry with you without compromising the quality a larger
magnifier would offer. This inexpensive, plastic linen tester has a strong acrylic lens of high
optical quality. A fold-out stand features both an inch scale (in 32nds) and
a millimeter scale printed on the base. The lens and base fold around into
place, creating a solid, yet portable unit. A rigid plastic case is included
to protect this compact magnifier while it is in your pocket, crime scene
kit or briefcase. |

B&L Linen Tester - Plastic |
$20.95 | |
|
This 2" portable magnifier has a 2X optical glass lens. The attached soft-leather case becomes a convenient handle once unfolded but protects the glass lens from scratches when folded. It is useful in almost any investigation or courtroom situation and fits in any shirt pocket, crime scene kit or briefcase. Do a quick evaluation of your latent prints at the crime scene to see if it is necessary to do a second or third lift. It is not recommended to evaluate your latent prints at the crime scene to see if you are going to keep them or not. Do that when you have sufficient light and a stronger magnifier back in the office. |
