When the first Marine marksman brought down an unsuspecting enemy soldier with his telescopic sighted rifle in 1965, it was the beginning of the end: the virtual impunity with which the Communist forces had so far operated in Southeast Asia would soon be a thing of the past. The U.S. Marine Corps Third Marine Division established the first sniper program in Vietnam, the Army followed with its own version and their combined effort proved to be among the most successful operations of the Vietnam War. This book focuses specifically on the Marine Corps program, the circumstances behind the training and employment of snipers, the equipment sent to Vietnam for sniper use, the transition from the Vietnam era M700 sniping rifle to the contemporary M40A1 and the extreme effectiveness with which Marine Scout Snipers countered the tactics of the guerrilla forces he faced.

The advent of jungle warfare in the South Pacific in 1942 opened an entirely new chapter in the art of fieldcraft and marksmanship as it pertained to the U.S. Marine Corps. It called for formulating innovative tactics still more efficient than those successfully implemented by the scouts, observers and snipers of World War I in order to effectively eliminate the Japanese jungle fighter, a new and different enemy. With that in mind, the Corps set about to train and field a new breed of combat specialist: The U.S. Marine Corps scout sniper. Peter R. Senich has documented what is undoubtedly the most thorough and accurate account ever published of the training, equipment and combat experiences that comprised this important facet of the history of Marine Corps sniping. Contains rare combat and training photos of scout snipers in action.
